Yan Pascal Tortelier, Philharmonia Orchestra - Ottorino Respighi: Roman Trilogy

Conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, this recording of Respighi: Roman Trilogy is a classic released by the British label Chandos in 1991. It is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Respighi’s orchestral tone poems, thanks to its exceptionally wide dynamic range and the magnificent, full-bodied acoustics of All Saints’ Church in London. The French conductor draws from the orchestra both the blazing power and massive brass sonorities of Roman Festivals and the delicate, impressionistic colours of Fountains of Rome, without ever allowing the musical textures to become muddied. Subsequently reissued as part of the acclaimed Chandos Classics series, the recording remains popular with audiophiles and orchestral-music enthusiasts as an exemplary showcase of Respighi’s colourful orchestration.
