Valerio Galli, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - Ruggero Leoncavallo: Pagliacci (Blu-ray)

This Blu-ray, released by Dynamic Records, features a performance of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s (1857–1919) opera Pagliacci (Pierrot), recorded in September 2019. This production by Florence’s Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino garnered widespread praise from critics, who particularly lauded the performance’s intense dramatic development and nuanced soundscape.

Premiered in Milan in 1892, Pagliacci is one of the most significant works in opera history depicting the harsh realities of life (verismo). Depicting the passion, jealousy, and betrayal of a traveling theater troupe, the work culminates in one of the most famous tenor arias in history, “Vesti la giubba.”

In this production, conductor Valerio Galli leads the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino orchestra and chorus with precision and passion, bringing out all the colors and dynamic variations of Leoncavallo’s score. The leading roles are played by a compelling cast of Italian singers, led by tenor Angelo Villari (Canio), acclaimed for his dramatic power, and soprano Valeria Sepe (Nedda).
