This work concludes the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra's recording of all of Sibelius' symphonies, conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvalin. The series has already won numerous awards around the world and reaches its climax with these three of Sibelius' greatest symphonies: Andrew Mellor writes in his introductory text that "we hear music carried by forms of gravitational energy reminiscent of the energies that govern the flow of a river." Rouvali has also decided to record eight excerpts from Sibelius's incidental music to Shakespeare's The Tempest. Premiered in March 1926, the work is one of Sibelius's last orchestral works and undoubtedly his most fascinating theatrical composition.
