Following the huge success of her 2011 album Kuniko Plays Reich and subsequent recordings of works by this groundbreaking composer, percussionist Kuniko has established herself as one of Steve Reich's foremost interpreters. Here she has recorded Kuniko Plays Reich II, a bold program of innovative works that span Reich's artistic career and showcase some of his groundbreaking techniques. Composed in his early thirties, Piano Phase is presented in Kuniko's own enchanting arrangement for two vibraphones; Kuniko is known for playing both parts. Nagoya Marimbas uses compositional tools that Reich made famous in Piano Phase, while Four Organs draws its inspiration from the Middle Ages. This captivating recital concludes with the Mallet Quartet, which sees Reich in a more melodic mood, while retaining his trademark tight rhythmic drive and canonical textures.
