Recorded during the 1982 US tour, the live album Travels expanded the scope of Metheny's music in two different directions. The increasing use of guitar synthesizers in combination with keyboard synthesizers created futuristic patterns. At the same time, Nana Vasconcelos' berimbau and percussion anchored the music to its roots. From this point on, Brazilian rhythms played an increasingly important role in Pat's work."
