Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Dancing Mozart
Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra
Juha Kangas conductor
The new release Dancing Mozart features the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra’s interpretations of works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart was known in his day as an enthusiastic dancer, and this album captures some of his more “dance-oriented” works. When Mozart was appointed to the position of “Imperial and Royal Chamber Musician” in 1787, he hoped that the title would eventually bring him more serious compositional commissions. It turned out differently: the Viennese court commissioned him to write a whole host of dances, which the court orchestra performed during carnival season in the famous Redoute halls. This recording of Mozart’s dances features Five Contradances, K. 609, and Six German Dances, K. 571, as well as the Marches in D major, K. 445 (320c) and K. 335 (320a), the distinctive Symphony in G major, K. 129, the Divertimento in F major, K. 138 (125c), in which Latin virtuosity is combined with the serenity of the classical style, learned counterpoint with the playfulness of comic opera, the Serenata notturna, K. 239, in which Mozart experimented with unusual instrumentation, and the emotional Adagio in E major for violin and orchestra, K. 261.
The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra’s interpretations of Mozart have received acclaim around the world. The concerts dedicated to Mozart’s music, which the OCC has organized since 1990, have been a hit with audiences.
