Matt Herskowitz - Upstairs (CD)

Upstairs is a critically acclaimed solo piano album released in 2012 by Canadian jazz pianist Matt Herskowitz and recorded live at Montreal’s iconic Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill. The album showcases Herskowitz’s signature style, in which dazzling classical piano technique blends seamlessly with modern jazz improvisation and world-music rhythms. Its eight tracks include Herskowitz’s own compositions alongside imaginative, rhapsodic arrangements of classical works by composers such as Bach and Schumann, as well as jazz standards by Gershwin and Michel Petrucciani. Particularly noteworthy is the opening track, “Dziekuje”, composed by Dave Brubeck and dedicated to Frédéric Chopin; Brubeck himself praised Herskowitz’s interpretation as one of the finest and most dynamic performances the piece had ever received.
