Manse-gospelin synty (book + cd)

Tampere was a key driving force behind the Finnish gospel movement.

Olli-Pekka Mäkinen and Hannu Virtanen shed light on the early history of the lesser-studied “Manse” gospel movement. The story begins in the mid-1960s, when rock music had already made its way to Finland, young people were rebelling against the ban on entertainment on Prayer Saturdays, and the electric guitar found its way into the church.
The book explores

• how these developments unfolded in Tampere during those turbulent years
• who the key influencers were and how the bands formed
• what kind of music emerged at a time when people marched for peace, debated the theology of revolution, and opposed racial discrimination
• what role the church played in the development of Manse gospel

Many barriers were broken down; the same bands and young musicians played just as well in church as they did on the dance floor and in the theater. Tampere gospel is part of the history of Manse rock.
The CD included with the book, along with related digital audio recordings and YouTube videos, document the songs and spirit of that turbulent era.
