Jorma Hynninen (b. 1941) is one of Finland's most internationally successful baritones, who made his breakthrough by winning the Lappeenranta Singing Competition in 1969 and later achieved world renown by performing on major stages such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and Milan's La Scala. Having sung over 60 opera roles during his career, Hynninen is known for his exceptionally deep and expressive voice, and he has distinguished himself particularly as an interpreter of Finnish opera, such as Aulis Sallinen's The Red Line and works by Einojuhani Rautavaara, as well as a lieder singer. Alongside his artistic career, he has significantly influenced Finnish cultural life by serving as the artistic director of the Finnish National Opera and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and as a professor of vocal music at the Sibelius Academy. His extensive work is showcased in the 3-CD compilation album "Suuri suomalainen laulaja" (The Great Finnish Singer), published by Reader's Digest in 2011, which is divided into the following sections:

  • CD 1: Orchestral songs, opera arias – This disc showcases Hynninen's dramatic power and large-scale interpretations. It includes his most iconic performances from well-known domestic and international opera roles, as well as major classical works accompanied by a symphony orchestra.
  • CD 2: Songs accompanied by piano – This disc focuses on Hynninen's sophisticated work with lieder and solo songs. The delicately interpreted pieces accompanied by piano include some of the most beloved compositions by Jean Sibelius, Toivo Kuula, and Oskar Merikanto.
  • CD 3: Sacred songs, folk songs – The final disc of the collection highlights Hynninen's interpretations of traditional works loved by Finns. The recordings cover touching and devout sacred songs, such as "Suomalainen rukous" (Finnish Prayer), as well as soulful, traditional Finnish folk songs.
