A huge collection of 160 CDs

This Brilliant Classics Bach Edition (99697), released in 2001, was a huge hit in the music world. It made Johann Sebastian Bach's entire life's work – over 170 hours of music – available to consumers at a record-breaking low price.

The six main volumes of the collection
The box is divided into six smaller sub-volumes (volumes 1–6), which group the works by genre:
Cantatas (volumes I & II / 60 CDs): Contains all of Bach's surviving church and secular cantatas.
Vocal Works (volume III / 21 CDs): Contains major masterpieces such as the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion, the Christmas Oratorio and the Mass in B minor.
Organ Works (volume IV / 17 CDs): Contains Bach's entire organ output, interpreted by organist Hans Fagius.
Keyboard Works (Volume V / 23 CDs): Includes, among others, the Well-Tempered Clavier and the Goldberg Variations played on harpsichord.
Orchestral and Chamber Music (Volume VI / 39 CDs): Includes the Brandenburg Concertos, Orchestral Suites, Violin Sonatas and Cello Suites.

Historic Recording Commission
The speciality of the box is its cantata section. The Dutch conductor Pieter Jan Leusink conducted the Netherlands Bach Collegium and the Holland Boys Choir under extreme time pressure. They recorded all of Bach's approximately 200 church cantatas in just 15 months between 1999 and 2000. Most of the other discs in the box (such as chamber music and concertos) were licensed from other well-known European labels.
