Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlos – a magnificent work of Western music drama – shows us a vast network of human relationships. Verdi approved no fewer than four versions of the opera.
The Royal Swedish Opera's live recording tells Schiller and Verdi's story of King Philip, caught between church and state, the child Carlos and his love for his stepmother Elisabeth of Valois, the idealistic Marquis of Posa and the passionate Princess of Eboli, against a backdrop of religious wars and imperialism, in an understandable way. And it does this without any violent cuts between the different versions. This version sung in Italian is based on the 1886 Modena version, with significant additions from the 1867 Paris version.

Alberto Hold-Garrido conducts the Royal Swedish Opera Chorus and the Royal Swedish Court Orchestra, and the roles are performed by internationally acclaimed soloists such as Jaakko Ryhänen (Philip II), Lars Cleveman (Don Carlos),
Peter Mattei (Rodrigo), Bengt Rundgren (Grand Inquisitor), Hillevi Martinpelto (Elisabeth Valois),
Ingrid Tobiasson (Eboli) and Iwa Sörenson, Klas Hedlund, Martti Wallén and Hilde Leidland.

The recording was made in 1999 and 2000 at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.
