Three Works for Clarinet
The new album Levitation by world-class clarinetist Christoffer Sundqvist and the Radio Symphony Orchestra features three wonderful compositions in which the clarinet takes center stage:
One of the most intriguing composers of our time, Peter Eötvös, playfully and arbitrarily mixes together completely different phenomena in his work Levitation, resulting in a moving and exhilarating surrealistic soundscape. On this CD, the clarinet in Eötvös’s work is played not only by Sundqvist but also by Kullervo Kojo. The FRSO is conducted by Hannu Lintu.
Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto, completed in 1928, received a mixed reception from his contemporaries due to its unromantic and “graphic” sound. Later, the work has become one of the most highly regarded clarinet concertos, and it is also performed with increasing frequency. Jani Niinimäki plays the snare drum.
Aulis Sallinen’s three-movement Concerto for Clarinet, Viola, and Chamber Orchestra prompts reflection on how indifferently people treat animals in pursuit of their own interests. In this recording, Tommi Aalto is the viola soloist, and the FRSO is conducted by Okko Kamu.
