Eick, Mathias - When We Leave

The expressive playing of Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick, which according to the New York Times radiates "an untouched but penetrating tone," is complemented remarkably well by talented warm-up artists and fellow travelers. Violinist Håkon Aase, one of the most notable improvisers of his generation, shadows the leader with his lines, which reflect his deep background in both folk and jazz. Drummers Helge Andeas Norbakken and Torstein Lofthus mirror their interaction with precise grooves. Close to the center of the action, pianist Andras Ulvo and bassist Audun Erlien convey ideas between the front line and the rhythm section and make their own statements. On several tracks, Stian Carstensen's delicate pedal steel guitar adds an extra dimension of mystery. When We Leave was recorded at Rainbow Studio in Oslo in August 2020.
