Dmitri Shostakovich - Orchestral Songs

Dmitri Shostakovich is known for his symphonies, chamber music, perhaps his popular series, and to some extent even his films. However, his vocal-symphonic music is largely unknown, with only his cycle of Jewish folk poems, Op. 79, having achieved wider popularity. This work brings together these hidden gems in authoritative interpretations by Mikhail Jurowski and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. Shostakovich's rich tradition is preserved under the baton of Semyon Bychkov and Rudolf Barshain, among others, from six word romances by Japanese poets to Michelangelo Buonarroti's series of verses.
