French Baroque Music
This new release features a collection of five works by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764), known also as a music theorist, titled Pièces de clavecin en concerts (1741). "En concerts" refers in this case to ensemble playing; Rameau states that he drew inspiration from certain highly successful harpsichord sonatas accompanied by violin, most likely those by Mondonville and La Guerre, but took the instrumental demands even further. Couperin’s “Royal Concerts,” Concerts royaux, likely also served as a model. On this album, the superb performances are delivered by Finland’s leading Baroque musicians of the moment: Aapo Häkkinen (harpsichord), Petri Tapio Mattson (violin), and Mikko Perkola (viola da gamba).
In Pièces de clavecin en concerts, all the instruments are treated with individuality and virtuosity. The works are teeming with colleagues and acquaintances, and a dense social network shines through the music. Antti Häyrynen writes: "To enjoy Rameau’s ‘concerts,’ the listener need not know anything at all about the circle of 1740s French musicians, their mutual relationships, or their topics of conversation. Yet it is from these that the music’s delicate and precise nuances spring forth, along with a chamber-music-like sociality in which each instrument is an individual and each theme is presented while listening to the others.”
