MTV Unplugged in New York is an acoustic live album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released in November 1994, and is widely considered one of the most poignant and iconic recordings in popular music history. Recorded a year earlier in New York for a television broadcast, the performance showcased the band's sound completely stripped down, raw, and intimate, serving as frontman Kurt Cobain's final major masterpiece before his death in April 1994. The band deliberately refused to play their biggest stadium hits, choosing instead to focus on deep album cuts and carefully selected covers, such as David Bowie's immortal "The Man Who Sold the World" and three songs alongside guest musicians from the band Meat Puppets. The album's fragile atmosphere, Cobain's agonizingly honest vocals, and the exceptional stage design adorned with candles and lilies gave the concert an almost funeral-like ambiance, leading the album to debut at number one worldwide and later win a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
