Buena Vista Social Club is both the name of this unique group of musicians and the album itself. It was recorded in just seven days in 1996 at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana, which date back to the 1950s. The atmosphere during the recording sessions made it clear that something truly special was happening. However, no one could have predicted that Buena Vista Social Club would become a global phenomenon—it won a Grammy Award in 1997 and outsold all other albums in the same genre with sales of over eight million copies. The popularity of the original album has elevated the artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, and Omara Portuondo) to superstar status, inspired Wim Wenders' award-winning film, and helped raise awareness of Cuba's rich musical heritage. The timeless quality of the music produced by Ry Cooder for World Circuit and the passion of the veteran performers have ensured that this will go down in history as one of the most significant recordings of the 20th century. To celebrate the album's 25th anniversary, producer Ry Cooder and World Circuit's Nick Gold have returned to the original tapes and archives to produce this Deluxe Remastered package, which includes previously unreleased tracks from the original 1996 recording sessions, previously unseen photographs, and new liner notes.
