Nathan Milstein once described Sergei Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto as "truly one of the best modern violin concertos... a brilliant work, perhaps the best of all Prokofiev's works," while the Second Concerto was interpreted by violinists such as David Oistrakh and Jascha Heifetz. Here, the work is interpreted by Ukrainian-born Vadim Gluzman, who, as many critics have noted, is firmly in the footsteps of these and other virtuosos of the 19th and 20th centuries. His numerous recordings for the BIS label have included concertos by Tchaikovsky and Bruch, as well as Gubaidulina and Barber, which have earned him recognition such as the Diapason d'or de l'année, as well as numerous recommendations in magazines and websites such as The Strad, BBC Music Magazine, Fono Forum, and ClassicsToday.com. On this album, Gluzman is accompanied by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Neeme Järvi, which has an impressive track record in Prokofiev's music. Gluzman concludes the program with Prokofiev's only solo work for violin, the Sonata in D major, Op. 115—one of the composer's lesser-known violin compositions. Strictly speaking, it is a sonata for several violins: Prokofiev composed the work in 1947 as an ensemble piece for violin students. Despite its pedagogical purpose, the sonata is much more than just a technical exercise, offering a wealth of ideas and emotions in a short space of time.
