Schumann: Carnaval / Boris Giltburg

The three works on this recording are collections of short pieces that are linked together to form a coherent whole – a form that Schumann himself invented, developed, and refined to perfection. Davidsbündlertänze (Dances of the Davidic League) was composed after Schumann's engagement to Clara Wieck, to whom he wrote: "If I have ever been happy at the piano, it was while composing these." Papillons (Butterflies) is the product of a youthful, free imagination, and Carnaval is one of his most popular works, combining technique and emotion.
