Salonen, Esa-Pekka - Works for Solo Cello - Smith, Wilhelmina

Cellist Wilhelmina Smith's solo album features works composed for solo cello by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Kaija Saariaho. Both composers belong to a generation of modernist Finnish composers whose works have gained wide acceptance in music culture around the world. Although both composers have their own distinct artistic personalities, they are known as a group for pushing the boundaries of their instruments. When composing for string instruments, and especially for the cello on this recording, Salonen and Saariaho exploit the technical possibilities of both the instrument and the performer to the utmost.
