Richard Wagner called Die Walküre the first evening of the Ring of the Nibelung and Das Rheingold the prologue or Vorabend. Musically and dramatically, we are led into a radically new and different world when the opening bars of Die Walküre resound. The fully developed palette of orchestral leitmotifs paints a wild storm, and the curtain rises to reveal a modest dwelling: a thoroughly human scene that has nothing to do with the gods, dwarves, and nymphs of Das Rheingold. At the same time, however, Die Walküre's way of depicting radical beginnings reveals some revealing memories of the events of Das Rheingold. Die Walküre is an exciting and deeply emotional drama. Guy Cassiers' Ring cycle at La Scala continues in this work, as in Rheingold, with numerous outstanding opera stars. Particularly noteworthy are the female leads, with the magnificent Waltraud Meier as Sieglinde, the delightful Nina Stemme as the powerful Brünnhilde, and Ekaterina Gubanova as the convincing Fricka. Simon O'Neill and John Tomlinson engage in an exciting duel as Siegmund and Hunding, and Vitalij Kowaljow gives a dark performance as Wotan. Daniel Barenboim offers a fantastic musical interpretation of this second and inspiring evening of the Ring.
