Mozart loved theater – in all its forms. Tobias Philipp von Gebler's didactic play "Thamos, King of Egypt" deals with Egypt, Freemasonry, and the Enlightenment. Mozart was a man of the Enlightenment, and the Masonic lodge to which he belonged was not esoteric but intellectual. The music he composed for the play is not among his best-known works, but it is one of his most significant achievements, with the choir playing a leading role. The idea of staging Thamos with his magnificent La Fura dels Baus troupe inspired Carlus Padrissa to develop his own new play based on the score. It is a spectacular, dramatic and theatrical journey in which dance, new texts and Mozart's score intertwine, with the addition of arias from other works sung by three soloists. The Mexican conductor, Egyptian soprano, Thai tenor, and German bass star are accompanied, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, by the Salzburg Bach Choir and Camerata Salzburg. Music brings people from different cultures together, and Mozart knew how to do this better than anyone else.
