Continuing its tradition of discovering little-known 20th-century operas, in 2010 the Bregenz Festival presented the first staging of Polish-Russian composer Mieczys?aw Weinberg's opera The Passenger. Composed in 1967–68, the opera tells the story of a chance encounter between a former concentration camp guard and one of his former prisoners on an ocean liner years after the war. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, brings the work to life, with Michelle Breedt and Elena Kelessidi shining in the leading roles. David Pountney's direction and Johan Engels' two-level set design, with the ocean liner upstairs and the concentration camp downstairs, provide excellent support for the work. "Magnificent, captivating: Mieczys?aw Weinberg's opera 'The Passenger', which tells the story of an Auschwitz survivor, has made a triumphant return to the Bregenz Festival."
