Commissioned by the Salzburg Festival, Jan Lauwers was once again asked to take on a new production. This time he is working on Luigi Nono's rarely performed contemporary opera Intolleranza 1960. Italian composer Luigi Nono (1924–1990) sought a new form of musical theater in which sound, simultaneity, and the spatial use of sound were explored and utilized in a unique way. Nono wrote Intolleranza 1960, considered his debut in the theater world, on commission for the XXIV International Festival of Contemporary Music at the Venice Biennale. The work premiered at the Teatro La Fenice almost 60 years ago and was considered one of the most significant works in the history of the post-war avant-garde and the culmination of Nono's first artistic period. This production of Intolleranza 1960, part of the Salzburg Festival's centenary celebrations, is unique not only in terms of its content but also because Nono's works have been performed in Salzburg over the last 25 years as exemplary performances. Jan Lauwers reinterprets this iconic work from 1961 with Intolleranza 1960. The renowned Nono expert Ingo Metzmacher is responsible for the musical direction. Jan Lauwers' choice to stage this opera fits well with the image of the present day. His exploration of what art can mean in society and what political power art can convey is typical of this era. Over the past two years, Jan Lauwers has intensively studied the significance of political art, which is reflected in this new production. The Salzburg Festival's most spectacular musical theater production featured an international cast of performers, dancers, singers, and musicians from around the world, including Sean Panikkar, Sarah Maria Sun, Anna Maria Chiuri, and many others, as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Includes the 56-minute documentary INTOLLERANZA – LUIGI NONO'S STAGE WORK IN THE PRESENT DAY, directed by Bettina Ehrhardt
An award-winning documentary directed by Bettina Ehrhardt about the history of the work Intolleranza 1960. The work is a musical theater piece in which Luigi Nono responded to the major political issues of his time: immigration and xenophobia, torture, industrial and natural disasters. Nono wanted to "bear witness" to his time – for him, music and political awareness were inseparable.
