The star of this Christmas concert, José Carreras, had just returned to his international career after a long battle with leukemia in 1987–1988. He marked his return with a highly successful open-air concert in July 1988, attended by 150,000 spectators in Barcelona, where he was born on December 5, 1946. A series of other highly acclaimed concerts emphatically highlighted the singer's "resurrection," which few believed they would ever see.
