It has long been a New Year's Day tradition for the Philharmonic to perform a program consisting of lively and nostalgic music from the extensive repertoire of the Strauss family and their contemporaries. These concerts delight not only the audience at the Musikverein in Vienna, but also enjoy great international popularity thanks to worldwide television broadcasts, which now reach more than 50 countries. Seiji Ozawa conducted the concert for the first time in 2002, and the light-hearted nature of the event brings out the mischievous and playful side of this always engaging conductor.
