Macbeth marked the beginning of Verdi's lifelong interest in William Shakespeare's works. Verdi came close to the master with his composition Othello and even surpassed him with Falstaff. Aware of the great musical and literary challenge, Verdi wrote the libretto himself and focused the work mainly on three main characters: Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the witches' prophecy. At the premiere on March 14, 1847, in Florence, the audience reacted very negatively to the work. The work only gradually established its position in the opera world. Luca Ronconi's new production of Verdi's early masterpiece, which premiered in June 1987 at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, received high praise in Germany and around the world.
