In 2012, the Hamburg State Opera presented a new production of Giacomo Puccini's masterpiece Madama Butterfly. Internationally renowned director Vincent Boussard staged the opera in collaboration with famous fashion designer Christian Lacroix and set designer Vincent Lemaire. Together, they have succeeded in bringing to life the moving tragedy of the young Japanese geisha Cio-Cio San in an elegant and sophisticated production, starring Greek soprano Alexia Voulgaridou in the title role. The dynamic cast, subtly directed by Alexander Joel, includes Romanian tenor Teodor Ilincai as Cio-Cio San's beloved B.F. Pinkerton and Estonian baritone Lauri Vasar as Consul Sharpless. Madama Butterfly contains a wealth of psychological poetry. Giacomo Puccini's music gives his characters rich and complex profiles and creates an exceptional explosive power.
