It is no coincidence that light textures and sensual orchestral colors are considered essential features of French music. Its history is linked to great names known for their instrumental artistry and sensitive use of tone, including the composers of the cello concertos on this recording: Camille Saint-Saëns, whose instrumental technique always combines color with transparency, Édouard Lalo, whom Claude Debussy greatly admired for the richness of color in his works, and Arthur Honegger, who painted impressive soundscapes not only in his cello concerto but also in his works without a large orchestra. It is often the subtle shading and delicate transitions that characterize the tonal colors of French music and give it its delightful charm. Daniel Müller-Schott – winner of the 2019 Opus Klassik Award – attractively combines five works from the French sound kaleidoscope on his latest album with the DSO Berlin and Alexandre Bloch's "Four Visions of France."
