Saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, bassist Christian Weber, and drummer Michael Griener have been members of genre-defining trios across Europe and the United States in recent decades, demonstrating how vital jazz is today in both its historical form and its free playing styles. The trio of Ellery Eskelin, Christian Weber, and Michael Griener plays free music and traditional jazz. They do not blend playing styles, but alternate, contrast, and deepen them. With their new album, The Pearls, they release their second studio album after their critically acclaimed Sensation of Tone. Ellery Eskelin writes in the liner notes: "In jazz, we talk about timing and free playing. Timing usually means expressing a steady pulse, and free playing usually means not following a steady pulse. In any case, the feeling of movement and time is still present. While making this album, I was amazed at how time can be so precise, so malleable, and so multidimensional at the same time. In these performances, you will hear free improvisations (without preconceptions or steady tempo) as well as interpretations of classical compositions from an earlier musical form, ragtime, which deals directly with time.
