On this unique recording, geomungo virtuoso Lee Jae-hwa performs the Geomungo Hoesang and Geomungo Sanjo suites in the styles of the South and North Korean peninsulas: with different forms, techniques, and rhythms, but with a common subtlety, sensitivity, and emotion.
The geomungo, a six-stringed zither, has 16 strings on a resonating board made of paulownia wood. Its roots go back to the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo (37 BCE–668 CE), which ruled over what is now North Korea and much of Manchuria. Its rich history stretches back some 1,600 years.
The geomungo produces dramatic sounds through the friction of the plectrum against the strings or the subtle movements of the left hand creating a rustling sound over the strings. Due to its precious and majestic nature, the geomungo was considered "the best of all instruments" throughout the Korean peninsula.
