Johannes Brahms' two cello sonatas are in stark contrast to each other. This is not only due to the fact that they were composed more than twenty years apart. Brahms favored pairs of works for the same instruments, which he often composed according to the principle of contrast. In the case of cello concertos, it is above all the character and mood of the pieces that illustrate the contrasts. In the version composed for cello, the Violin Sonata Op. 78, one of Brahms' finest chamber music works, complements the two original cello sonatas in a charming way.
