Arrigo Boito: Mefistofele

Arrigo Boito's interpretation of the Faust legend is imaginative, yet faithful to Goethe's original concept. The score is memorable for its rich orchestral passages, beautifully accentuated by lyrical episodes and choral interludes. Robert Carsen's lavish, postmodern production of Mefistofele is a gloriously decadent and theatrically magnificent realization, and the San Francisco Opera's performance has received unanimous praise in both Paris and San Francisco. Samuel Ramey has won great acclaim from critics and audiences alike in the title role.
