In March 2020, Thomas Adès, one of the most respected and frequently performed contemporary composers of our time, conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Gerstein in the world premiere of his piano concerto. Commissioned by the BSO for Kirill Gerstein, the work is already becoming part of concert programs around the world. This live recording, which proved to be a captivating celebration of contemporary music and received an enthusiastic reception from both audiences and critics, is combined on the album with Adès's 2013 work Totentanz. In Totentanz, a baritone (Mark Stone) and a mezzo-soprano (Christianne Stotijn) perform as soloists with a (very) large orchestra, and the work opens a dialogue between the charismatic and cheerfully macabre Death and his numerous victims, from the pope to a maiden and a child.
