Hans Abrahamsen's Schnee (2008) is a magnificent marvel that encapsulates the spirit of winter. Already a classic of the 21st century, this instrumental cycle consists of ten canons that form an hour of eerie, feather-light music. There is no rush, only great depth. As Abrahamsen himself says: "In Schnee, a single moment is stretched as far as possible. At some point, the music disappears. All that remains is a breath of air." Founded in 1972, the Lapland Chamber Orchestra is the northernmost professional chamber orchestra in Finland and the entire EU. The orchestra has 18 permanent members and its artistic director is conductor John Storgårds. The first principal guest conductor for 2019–2021 is Tomas Djupsjöbacka. Based in Rovaniemi, the orchestra is a regional orchestra that tours regularly in the province of Lapland, but also performs elsewhere in Finland and abroad. The orchestra has performed at festivals such as the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Helsinki Festival, Korsholm Music Festival, and LuostoClassic. Its most recent international tours have taken the orchestra to Canada, Hungary, Austria, Algeria, and the BBC Proms concert hall in London.
