Garrett, Kenny - Sounds from the Ancestors

Composer/saxophonist Kenny Garrett rose to prominence on the national scene in 1978. His undeniable talent for emotive melodic phrasing led him to collaborate with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. In Sounds from the Ancestors, Garrett recalls the spirit of the voices of African ancestors in church services, recited prayers, field songs, Yoruba songs, and African drums, and pays tribute to Roy Hargrove and two drumming pioneers — Art Blakey and Tony Allen — who all looked to the past to influence the future sound and development of jazz.
