The music of Ukrainian-born Soviet composer Yuri Shaporin (1887–1966), rooted in the traditions of Borodin and Mussorgsky, is situated between Scriabin's late Romanticism and the harder sounds of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, combining the master of counterpoint with a keen understanding of Russian keyboard playing. In Shapurin's piano music, his epic tendencies – expressed in two expansive sonatas and a magnificent passacaglia – contrast with a number of gentle, almost capricious miniatures. Kirill Kozlovski is a Finnish-Belarusian pianist, harpsichordist, and researcher. He received his doctorate from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki for his research on the music of Dmitri Shostakovich (2017). His current research interests include Soviet music and cultural history, as well as the performance practices of the Russian piano school.
