Oscar Wilde describes his work Salomé as containing “refrains whose recurring motifs make it resemble a piece of music and bind it together into a ballad.” In Richard Strauss’s opera adaptation of Wilde’s play, the rich compositions are underpinned by a densely woven series of leitmotifs depicting the relationship between Herodias’s daughter and the prophet Jochanaan. In Gabriele Lavia's successful 2010 production in Bologna, Erika Sunnegårdh's portrayal of Salome's naive carefreeness, sexual obsession, and cruelty is subtly reflected in the staging. Under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductor Nicola Luisotti, an all-star cast of experienced singers, including Mark S. Doss as Jochanaan, Robert Brubaker as Herod, and Dalia Schaechter as Herodias, energetically perform Strauss's early masterpiece.
