Mahler, Gustav - Symphony No. 5 - Järvi, Paavo

This recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, conducted by its music director Paavo Järvi, is the first complete recording of Mahler's symphonies. Järvi has, of course, conducted Mahler's works many times during his career, but he has waited for the right moment to record the entire cycle in the studio: the right moment not only in his musical career, but also in his relationship with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. The maturity and power evident in the orchestra's recordings for Alpha Classics have been praised in the music press since 2019. "Mahler really opened up a new universe with his Fifth Symphony, in which he began an incredibly personal style of music-making," says Paavo Järvi. "The very nature of the beginning – a military funeral – and its tragedy, combined with the idea of starting the symphony in this way, signals that something completely different is in store for us."
