John Neumeier's free adaptation of Thomas Mann's novella Death in Venice for the magnificent dancers of the Hamburg Ballet walks a fine line between sharp theatricality and melodrama, brilliant movements and banal gestures. The primary message is that the life of an artist – even a famous and successful one – can be hell if they are not in creative contact with their inner child, their emotions.
