With his seven symphonies, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius ranks among the greatest symphonic composers of the 20th century. His music evokes images of Finland's eerie landscapes, has inner strength and depth, and is full of technical sophistication that continues to challenge both conductors and performers. For Sibelius, "a symphony is not a 'composition' in the usual sense. Rather, it is an expression of faith at different stages of life." In honor of Jean Sibelius's 150th birthday, this DVD release offers live recordings of the composer's seven symphonies, recorded by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the new Helsinki Music Center under the baton of Hannu Lintu. Each symphony is preceded by a documentary and introduction that provide a new and modern perspective on the legendary Finnish composer and his symphonies. Special features: This release includes introductions to each symphony. These documentary segments, hosted and narrated by Hannu Lintu, conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, can also be viewed as a separate hour-long program. SORT OF SIBELIUS! 8 fictional short documentaries. Jean Sibelius updated. Eight experts share their views on the composer's personality. Sort of Sibelius! offers a new perspective on Sibelius. The focus is not on the music, but on the person. The genre is a fictional short documentary featuring both drama performed by actors and animation techniques. Composer Kaija Saariaho acts as commentator. Other interviewees include experts from various fields, such as a doctor, a couples therapist, a wine connoisseur, and a wilderness guide. Sibelius left behind numerous diaries, letters, notes, and receipts. They paint a picture of a cheerful and interesting personality. How accurate this impression is remains a mystery.
