Edvard Grieg, probably the most popular composer ever to emerge from the Scandinavian peninsula, made a significant contribution to the chamber music canon with his violin sonatas rather than his cello works: only one sonata for cello and piano (Op. 36) was composed for this ensemble. Daniel Müller-Schott, who has always sought to expand the musical repertoire of his instrument and has a keen sense of transcription, transcribed and recorded Grieg's works for this album – his 20th album on the Orfeo label – the first time the Violin Sonata in C minor, Op. 45, No. 3, has been transcribed for cello. The short Intermezzo in A minor (EG 115), accompanied on the piano by his long-time duo partner Herbert Schuch, leads us into the second part of the album, in which the duo performs a selection of different types of songs transcribed for cello and piano.
