Mariss Jansons conducts the brilliantly playing Bavarian Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra, transforming the golden hall of Vienna's Musikverein into a heavenly foyer. Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova has been closely associated with the Vienna State Opera for many years, while mezzo-soprano Marina Prudenskaja has established her international career with one significant role after another. Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu was chosen by Claudio Abbado at the age of 22 to sing Ferrando in the opera Così fan tutte. Bulgarian bass Orlin Anastassov, for his part, has established himself as an outstanding Verdi singer. Verdi's Messa da Requiem is a work of superlatives: a magnificent structure featuring brilliant brass instruments, powerful choral masses and virtuoso parts for four soloists... A profound and heartfelt work... a mass for the dead without sentimental overtones... possibly the most significant achievement in 19th-century liturgical music.
