Born in Estonia in 1959, Erkki-Sven Tüür composes music characterized by intense energetic change. His intuitive and rational approach synthesizes into a complete organic system. He has composed nine symphonies, ten concertos, numerous chamber music works, and one opera. Tüür's ninth symphony, dedicated to his compatriot Paavo Järvi and composed in 2018 in honor of the centenary of the Republic of Estonia, is entitled Mythos. According to the composer, it refers to myths about nations and their independence and also deals with the long history of the Finno-Ugric peoples. Paavo Järvi and his Estonian Festival Orchestra have recorded the world premiere of the work together with Myrskyn loitsun (Ormiloits, 2004), dedicated to Estonian composer Veljo Tormis and Sow the Wind, a work composed in 2015 and inspired by climatic "gusts of wind" and "whirlwinds."
