Einar Englund (1916–99) was not only one of Finland's most important symphonists, but also one of his country's most important pianists, and he was destined for a career as a virtuoso until he injured his fingers as a soldier fighting against the invading Russians. He composed surprisingly little for his own instrument, but his works shone with Prokofievian steel strength and clarity of texture, enlivened by the composer's characteristic ironic humor.
