GEORGE BIZET'S ORIGINAL VERSION OF CARMEN ON DVD AND 2 CDs
In Stephan Märki's interpretation, Carmen is a woman who longs for death and uses sex as a weapon in a world where seduction is power, but devotion means destruction. Love and death are embodied in a dancer who mirrors Carmen's thoughts and feelings. Conductor Mario Venzago draws on musicologist Fritz Oeser's research on Carmen, which restores Bizet's original version and gives the work new depth and new life to its well-known arias. Philipp Fürhofer's set design places the singers in a mirrored cabinet, creating a mise en abyme effect of perspectives and references.
