Domenico Cimarosa's operas were remarkably successful and were performed and reprised in opera houses across Europe. His success in his hometown of Naples led to court appointments and royal commissions, including his most famous work, Il matrimonio segreto ("The Secret Marriage"), which was composed for Emperor Leopold II of Austria. Other hits include L'impegno superato ("The Broken Engagement"), which was an instant success and soon became one of Cimarosa's most performed operas, and Penelope, which was even performed in London in 1817. However, Cantata per Ferdinando IV was written as an act of repentance, as Cimarosa had made the mistake of supporting the failed republican government in 1799.
